Fact Sheet

Rugby is the fastest growing team sport in America today. In Charlotte, and across North Carolina, thousands of youth are introduced to, and are playing the sport in both school based clubs and recreational leagues. Matthews and South Charlotte have developed into Rugby’s competition hub in the Southeast.

North Carolina Amateur Sports recognizing Rugby’s meteoric rise in popularity seized upon the opportunity to partner with NCHSRA and include the sport in this year’s North Carolina Powerade State Games. The State Games are North Carolina's largest multi-sport festival and one of the largest State Games programs in the United States.

Tournament Facts

Date: Saturday, June 28, 2014

Time: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM

Location: Mecklenburg County SportsPlex in Matthews, NC Map: 1505 Tank Town Road, Matthews, NC

Captain’s Meeting:        8:45 AM

Competition begins at 9:00 AM

Attendees: General Public, 40 Teams of All Ages, Family Orientated. Expected attendance: 1000.

What’s Included in The Fee:

  • Four (4) games guaranteed
  • Queen City 7’s Championship Cup to winning team in each division 
  • Powerade State Games T-shirt (if registered before June 14) and other goodies

Who can Compete:

  • Any CIPP registered USA Rugby member may compete in the Powerade State Games Queen City 7’s competition.

Team Requirements: 

  • Teams and Participants must return team and athlete forms at time of registration.
  • All participants must be USA Rugby members and teams must provide their membership CIPP number when registering online and on-site
  • Minors under the age 18 require a qualified parent or legal guardian to complete participant waiver forms

Competition Note: 

  • A competition team may only enter ONE division
  • U-19:  Player is eligible if they have not reached their 19th birthday as of September 1, 2013.
  • U-14:  Player is eligible if they have not reached their 14th birthday as of September 1, 2013
  • U-12:  Player is eligible if they have not reached their 12th birthday as of September 1, 2013

Awards:

  • The winning team of each division will receive a Queen City 7’s Championship Cup.
  • Each participant of the top three finishers in each division will receive a Powerade State Games of NC gold, silver or bronze medal.

OFFICIAL POWERADE STATE GAMES HOTELS:
Participants are responsible for their own housing arrangements while competing in the Powerade State Games of North Carolina. Competitive rates are currently being negotiated at hotels throughout the Charlotte Region for your sport. Please be sure to mention the Powerade State Games of North Carolina when making reservations to ensure you receive the discounted rates. To ensure rates and availability, we strongly suggest making hotel reservations no later than May 31, 2014.

2014 POWERADE STATE GAMES OPENING CEREMONIES
The 2014 Powerade State Games of North Carolina Opening Ceremonies, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, is the largest and most exciting event of the Games. This year’s Opening Ceremonies is an official USOC sanctioned Olympic Day Celebration and will take place on Friday, June 20th at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord. All Powerade State Games athletes are invited to walk down pit road and across the start/finish line in the annual Parade of Athletes! See yourself on the largest video screen in the United States! The parade will end with the lighting of the ceremonial cauldron from the Charlotte Motor Speedway infield.

FREE POWERADE FANFEST!

The Powerade FanFest will be held prior to Opening Ceremonies just outside the Sprint Cup Garage at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The FanFest will feature interactive sports-themed inflatables, games, simulators and mascots. The Powerade FanFest is FREE and OPEN to the public!

FREE POWERADE STATE GAMES GIFT BAG!

Athletes that participate in the Powerade State Games Parade of Athletes will receive a FREE Powerade State Games drawstring bag, including the official Powerade State Games Opening Ceremonies T-shirt, a Powerade water bottle, an assortment of Lance crackers and other goodies (limited to the first 1,000 athletes). The Powerade State Games Olympic cauldron will be lit after the Parade of Athletes to announce the official start of the Powerade State Games of North Carolina!
