  • The HOGGS Win Their Second Straight U19 Title!

June 13, 2010 - Jeff Greene (PHS HOGGS Asst. Coach)

The HOGGS 7’s side continued their winning ways, capturing their second straight championship trophy.  After winning the Ft. Bragg Airborne 7’s Tourney, a couple of weeks ago, the HOGGS travelled to Greenville, SC on June 12th to compete in the Green Vegas 7’s tournament.  The HOGGS really came together as a team in this South Carolinian rugby hub, going undefeated, easily sweeping the competition aside from Asheville, Greenville and Easley, to take the U19 High School crown.

    Hoggs vs. Easley                      24 – 5   W

    Hoggs vs. Greenville                 17 – 0   W

    Hoggs vs. Asheville                  24 – 7   W

    Hoggs vs. Greenville (Final)       17 – 5   W

Number 2 under the belt. The 7s side after the recent win in Greenville, SC.

Coach PJ Anderson, the Director of Rugby Operations at Charlotte Rugby Club, has done a great job unifying players from West Meck and Providence High Schools into the team to beat on the U19 7’s circuit. Congratulations to Hooker, Drew “Buzz” Busbee, on his first ever try. Back line players Austin Bryant-Ellis and Cory Graham recorded their first career 7’s scores.  Buzz, Cory and Austin all got to “shoot the boot” (Gatorade) to commemorate their auspicious achievement!

Congratulations are also due to our  “Big Brothers” and rugby mentors at the Charlotte Rugby Club.  The Senior 7’s side, coached by Jako Ah Hoy, dominated the field again in the Men’s Open Division, also winning their second title in a row.  Between the HOGGS and the CRFC Seniors we are bringing plenty of hardware back to Charlotte.

If any players would like to come along for practices and games you can contact PJ Anderson for more information.

The win secured a semi-final berth, where they put up a gallant fight only to be beaten 24-12 by number 3 seed, Xavier High School from New York City. (Xavier went on to win the tournament). In the playoff for third and forth, Charlotte Catholic were well beaten by the number 1 seed, Jesuit of Sacramento.
